Minority Youth Overtake Whites in 2020, 50% Under 18

by Amna El Tawil
According to a new analysis of the US Census Bureau data, the population of politically influential whites in America is expected to decrease by 14%. At the same time, minorities will represent more than 50% of all 18-year-olds and younger by 2020.

The Brookings Institution, in making the case for government spending and attention to the new minority-majority, revealed the Census expectations. In a blog post, they said: “When white Americans see that minority children make up ever greater shares of young people in schools and playgrounds, they rarely understand the reason.  It is, in large part, because the nation’s white youth are declining in number and have been for more than a decade. Between 2000 and 2015, the United States has seen an absolute loss of 6.8 million white men and women who are younger than age 20, a decline of 14%. At the same time, the total U.S. population grew by 14%.”

The decreased rates of white youth in the United States has become a national phenomenon that’s happening in 47 states and 90% of the country’s 3100 counties, particularly in Appalachia and the Rust Belt.

Census projections estimate that in decades to come, more young whites will be passing age 20 than will be born or will immigrate.  And as the white population ages, there will be proportionately fewer white women of childbearing age.

The Brookings Institution writes: “The 2020 Census will show that more than half of Americans under age 18 are racial minorities. Going forward these groups along with African Americans will provide all of the nation’s child population gains as well as all future gains in its labor force.” That’s why investments in multiracial generations should be made. Instead of dividing the country and spreading hatred between ethnic groups, races, and religions, both Democrats and Republicans have to put more effort into youth education and building a positive environment that will lead to economic success.
