MSM strikes again: Detroit Free Press buries the lead in story about oil spill hazard in the Great Lakes

via reddit:

Somebody posted this story Line 5 pipeline study: Canada gets the oil, Michigan gets the risk in /r/Politics. It talks about a dispute over an oil pipeline at the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac. It’s a lengthy, in-depth article, yet it never mentions where the Straits of Mackinac are– between and connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

So it never mentions that if this pipeline ever blew, it would pollute two of the Great Lakes. Two of the major sources of fresh water in North America.

According to a study published by the University of Michigan, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a leak in Enbridge 5 near the Straits of Mackinac could affect roughly 700 miles of shoreline….The study found that 3,528 square miles (15%) of Lake Michigan’s open water and roughly 13,611 square miles (60%) of Lake Huron’s open water could be impacted by visible oil.

But literally no mention of Lake Michigan or Lake Huron in the entire article. That’s a whopper of an oversight, so I did a little digging. Sure enough:

Detroit Free Press is owned by Alden Global Capital, which was founded in 2007 by Randall D. Smith, who is “a Strategic Sourcing Advisor at Exxon Mobil, the world’s largest oil company” and owns 71% of Inland Resources, which is an oil and gas company.

If anyone ever asks you for an example of the MSM being controlled by corporate interests, point them to this bizarre article and the man who owns the Detroit “Free” Press.
