54% of Millennials want Universal Basic Income ("Free Money")

And it looks like they’re going to get it. One model being put forth would hand EVERYBODY – including those who already have an income – at least $650/month.
Looks like we’ll all get bread. Hollywood will provide the circus.

Political philosopher and economist Karl Widerquist remembers a poll from 10 years ago that showed just 12 percent of Americans approved of a universal basic income.
That’s changed — and quickly. Today, 48 percent of Americans support it, according to a new Northeastern University/Gallup survey of more than 3,000 U.S. adults.
The survey looked at universal basic income as a solution for Americans who have lost jobs to automation.

“It represents an enormous increase in support,” said Widerquist, an associate professor at Georgetown University in Qatar and an advocate for a universal basic income. “It’s really promising.”
Proposals for universal basic income programs vary, but the most common one is a system in which the federal government sends out regular checks to everyone, regardless of their earnings or employment.
Pilots of such programs are underway in Finland and Canada. In rural Kenya, a basic income is managed by nonprofit GiveDirectly. India — with a population of more than 1.3 billion residents — is considering establishing a universal basic income.

Finland is doing it…..

One of the hopes there, too, is a leaner bureaucracy. It’ll be 2019 before they review its success. Here’s the New York Times somewhat pessimistic view of it (and it’s a liberal paper)…..

  1. If Common Core Education has “taught” us anything, it is that money is now free.
The lesson that has yet to be “taught” to the Common Core educated, is that eventually money isn’t free.

  2. I believe this statistic for millennials. I have some working for me and we discussed this at lunch one day and they thought is was “only fair everyone got some type of income” and that this would solve problems like homelessness. they were perfectly willing to pay more taxes to support it also. we are grooming socialists for sure.

      • oh, they believe in health care for all and once again are ready to pay more taxes for that. Interesting thing is not one of them has kids, nor owns a home or car and these are their lifestyle choices. If/when they want these things and see more and more of their hard earned money going to pay for free things for other people, I wonder if their attitudes will change. Never discussed Syria or Israel with them so not sure where they stand there.

    • if there are any jobs , if NOT then be a BILL COLLECTOR, but first max out all your credit cards ,then buy BACK your DEBT at 3 CENTS on the dollar and burn it.
then do it over and over until you don’t need to work?

  3. UBI would work in a post scarcity world but we do not live in such a world. This money which can be exchanged for resources would have to come from somewhere as the government can not create value.

  4. OK !! Let’s have a “universal basic income”. We only have to find a way to fund such a UBI. To pay for it we will have a “universal basic income tax” of 150%. That seems fair to me.
