Even as the Brandon admin seems to be backing off national vaccine mandates, I keep hearing anecdotally that large corporations are ramping up pressure to force employees to take the vaccine or face an endless ordeal of extremely onerous, ongoing and expensive testing. I’m sure a huge part of this is simply the fact that companies in America don’t like to allow their employees to take sick time, and if the vaccine is said to reduce covid symptoms or recovery time, then corporations are only too happy to compel employees to take it for the sake of efficiency and the bottom line.
Of course, unfair policies like this could easily be fought at any company where all employees threatened to walk where this kind of pressure is being applied. But the result of 50 years of immigration, outsourcing, diversity hiring, women in the workforce, plus right to work laws, at-will employment etc have reduced the collective bargaining power of American labor to its lowest point since the 1930s. Both the Democrat and Republican parties have been complicit in this, but the GOP especially bears the blame for decades of telling conservatives that the way to fight liberal government overreach is by surrendering all their rights to Big Business.
And because covid was converted into a “culture war” issue by elites and a mass media eager to find a new issue to divide White Americans into irreconcilable ideological camps, corporations forcing their workers to take a vaccine which by all accounts 1) does not prevent you from catching the virus, 2) does not stop you from spreading the virus, 3) has caused terrible side effects in some cases—because they don’t want to pay for sick time—is getting no pushback from progressives because they’ve been convinced obeying Big Pharma on covid is a moral imperative and a holy crusade.
