I believe this has little to do with the actual conflict and more to do with courting the White nationalist and anti-interventionist voters.
White nationalists were a key component of the popular rise and energy behind the 2016 Trump campaign.
A demographic which then abandoned his pathetic campaign in 2020.
Now Trump and DeSantis are competing to court a demographic which beings the only real vitality to political contests.
DeSantis may further abandon his relitigation of COVID in order to take up yet more positions designed to court nationalists, as Trump has been doing.
Nationalist policies are more influential than we recognize, and continue to grow in importance.
