Had an appointment with the doctor over the weekend who gave me some troubling news, nothing dire but still something of concern. When I asked why or what it could have caused this he began with the ‘well I wouldn’t rule out stress from the pandemic’ bit. Said ‘trust me, I’ve worked straight through this and it has not been a stress factor in the slightest’. That’s when he dropped the act, closed the door and opened up to me..
Told me how his father in law had been battling cancer for several years and began to decline. After being told he had maybe a month left, they checked him into a hospital to keep him comfortable through the end. Two weeks later he tested positive for covid and died the following week. When he received the death certificate, sure enough COVID was listed as cause of death despite battling terminal cancer for years. Based on this, the median age of mortality and number of co-morbidities and financial incentives it finally hit him. He prefaced this with telling me he doesn’t often admit this due to the fear of retribution from the medical community. I understand this isn’t a mind-blowing story by any means, but hearing this from a doctor gave me some hope that there are others out there like him. Can only hope others like him continue waking up and more importantly, find the courage to speak out.
