Kremlin Claims Hacking Accusations Are Amateurish

by Amna El Tawil
Throughout the presidential campaign, Russia was accused of conducting cyber attacks aimed at Hillary Clinton and Democratic Party. Then, Donald Trump won and Russia was, accused, yet again that they intervened in the election with the purpose to secure Trump’s victory. Accusations that Russia tried to influence the US election in favor of Donald Trump resemble a witch-hunt, Kremlin said in its first reaction to the release of the US intelligence report on the alleged Russian operation.

The Guardian reports: “The Kremlin has hit back at a US intelligence report blaming Russia for interference in the presidential election, describing the claims as part of a political witch-hunt.

“These are baseless allegations substantiated with nothing, done on a rather amateurish, emotional level,” Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told journalists on Monday. “We still don’t know what data is really being used by those who present such unfounded accusations.”

Dmitry Peskov also added: “We are growing rather tired of these accusations. It is becoming a full-on witch-hunt.”

At the same time, the editor-in-chief of RT, Margarita Simonyan, hit back at claims in a US intelligence report that the news organization engaged in a longstanding effort aimed at undermining US viewers’ trust in US democratic procedures.

Simonyan emailed the Guardian saying: “The agencies’ only charge against RT is that we were critical of Clinton in reporting actual facts about her. This is our supposed crime! What a resounding endorsement of journalism and freedom of speech. Apparently, all foreign media organizations have to follow an approved script of acceptable coverage, lest they are accused of interference. And make no mistake, we’re not talking about neutrality. The only acceptable approach was, ‘Support Clinton, attack Trump’.”
