President Trump Is Not Backing Down on Tariffs

by Chris Black

A number of senior members of the US Congress, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, had joined what has been described as “tariffs resistance”, and demanded the POTUS to kill his proposed aluminum and steel tariff proposal. Here’s a statement from Paul Ryan from earlier on Monday:

“We are extremely worried about the consequences of a trade war and are urging the White House to not advance with this plan. The new tax reform law has boosted the economy and we certainly don’t want to jeopardize those gains”

Various other Republican leaders also said on Monday that they’re considering, let me quote, “a potential action down the line” if the Donald pushes his agenda of imposing tariffs on imported aluminum and steel, which by the way makes for one of his quintessential electoral promises, together with renegotiating trade deals like NAFTA et al. However, President Trump seems to be determined to not back down on his Thursday promise, when he made public his intentions of imposing steel and aluminum tariffs, and he said during a Monday oval office presser:

“No, we’re not backing down,”

The POTUS announced he would slap a 20% tariff on steel imports and a 10% tariff on aluminum, with many of his personal advisors and various mainstream media pundits screeching that such a measure would ignite a trade war. Trump retorted on Friday, saying that tariffs are sometimes a good thing:

China had an immediate reaction to the POTUS announcement, saying that:

“United States to show restraint in using protective trade measures, respect multilateral trade rules, and make a positive contribution to international trade order.”

while the unelected bureaucracy of the European Union threatened with reciprocity, i.e. that the EU will slap tariffs on iconic American brands and products, such as Harley Davidson motorcycles, Levi’s blue jeans and, God forbids, Bourbon whiskey. Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage slammed the EU, pointing out the European Union has similar policies with regard to international trade:

“The European Union is a club run by unelected bureaucrats, bullies — and they’re used to getting their own way. And this story at the moment is being portrayed as Trump is the bad guy, the European Union is the good guys. Trump is the protectionist. The European Union are the free traders. It is deep hypocrisy for the EU to be doing this. They have already put tariffs on aluminum and steel. And the fact that Trump does it — so it’s OK for the European Union to do it, but it’s not OK for Trump to do it. So it’s absolutely ridiculous, and if the European Union want to retaliate by putting further tariffs on Tennessee bourbon or Levi’s jeans or Harley Davidsons, they will find a tit-for-tat with German motorcars. So, I would say to the EU: All that Trump has done are the same things that you yourself has done. Leave it where it is. And if you want to push it, this man will not back down.”

DOW soared 400 points on Monday, despite the doom and gloom warnings from the globalist establishment. Trump also said on Monday he will not back down on tariffs until the infamous NAFTA treaty will be renegotiated:
“NAFTA, which is under renegotiation right now, has been a bad deal for U.S.A. Massive relocation of companies & jobs. Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum will only come off if new & fair NAFTA agreement is signed.”

Ross Perot was correct on NAFTA, as many of us knew at the time. Trade agreements are just one of the globalist tools used to subvert our independence and freedom. It is a conspiracy and plot to overthrow our freedoms so they (the globalists and bankers) can rule the world. Go get ’em Donald. This is actually as important as immigration when it comes to national security and the future of our nation. President Trump is engineering a reverse “giant sucking sound” so to speak, while Canada and Mexico are calling for a conference to work this out.  This quote from the 1933 movie “Gabriel Over the White House” comes to mind. The fictional President Hammond, upon hearing our allies call for another conference to work out trade and their WWI debt repayment to the U.S. :

“I have never seen the American eagle go into one of these
conferences that it didn’t come out plucked to its pin feathers.”

Here’s Peter Schiff’s critique on tariffs and trade wars (unwinnable by the United States in his view) which may result from such a move:

Now, if you ask me, President Trump realizes these fools on both sides of the aisle have never created any jobs, never ran businesses and he also knows if they are fighting him on this it is because they are getting money from any company who opposes tariffs. Why would anyone think members of Congress know anything about money, trade deals or anything else? They are in bed with each other. Republicans and Democrats alike.

  1. Tariffs are a good idea that help smaller businesses on both sides of the border (ones that can’t afford the marketing and bureaucracy needed to make international deals) at the expense of giant multinationals who want to squeeze any competition through cheap imports and slave labor abroad.
Of course given who controls the media, it’s going to be portrayed as “Trump is worse than Hitler” once more, and Juncker is already thinking about replying with tariffs not on stuff that the EU countries can produce themselves, but on stuff made mostly in Red States, in order to punish Trump.
Juncker needs to share a cell with the Clintons and Bushes.

  2. It would appear that should the trade wars become full blown as a result of the imposed tariffs on hard goods Americans will see the beginning of out of control inflation. The Great Depression, which lasted more than a decade, from
    1929 till
the beginning of the Second World War in 1941, was a result of the the 1930
    Smoot-Hawley
tariffs that put world trade into a tailspin from which it did not
    recover
    until World War II began.
Those who do not learn history and those who do learn history are doomed to repeat it. …
