Trump and Sessions Go to War Against California, Sanctuary State

By Bob Shanahan (FKA as Robert Carbery)

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was in Downtown Sacramento, California, the capital city of the nation’s first sanctuary state, on Wednesday to give a speech to the California Peace Officers Association, following the Trump Justice Department’s lawsuit filed on Tuesday, challenging the three recently passed state laws directly contradicting federal immigration law.

“The Department of Justice and the Trump Administration are going to fight these unjust, unfair, and unconstitutional policies,” Attorney General Sessions told law enforcement officials yesterday. This clash between federal immigration law and states’ sovereignty is necessary as the nation’s justice department is tasked with reducing crime in America and making cops’ jobs easier.

79-year old (turning 80 in a month) California Governor Jerry Brown dismissed Sessions’ accusations as a “political stunt,” while the open borders liberal leader of the sanctuary state decried the AG’s attacks, defending his recently signed laws.

“At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America,” Brown declared. Despite the fact that the laws he passed are a massive middle finger to the Trump administration, Brown still somehow states that Sessions and his ilk are the ones dividing the country. Law and order is being thrown out the window for political purposes and the safety of our citizens is in jeopardy. But our liberal lawmakers in California care little about that.

Instead, California’s politicians passed a law offering additional protections for illegal workers in the state against federal immigration agents. Justice Department officials have said that this sanctuary state law explicitly prevents companies from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. Many companies are feeling torn between contradictory state and federal laws regarding immigration and employment matters, with penalties being steep for both.

Another sanctuary state law passed by California last year protects illegal immigrants by limiting state and local municipalities from cooperating with ICE, in particular, withholding pertinent information on detained illegal immigrants in our jails. The third law gives state officials power to inspect immigrant detention facilities that are run by or contracted through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Sessions’ Justice Department feels confident that the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause will give it the requisite authority to supersede these state laws that directly interfere with DHS’s mandate to enforce federal immigration law.

Gov. Brown continued his apocalyptic rhetoric on Wednesday, slamming Sessions for “initiating a reign of terror” against immigrants in California. Of course, the Sacramento Bee does not differentiate between illegal immigrants and legal immigrants. The Justice Department is cracking down on illegal immigration, not immigration overall. And guess what, California? Donald Trump deported far fewer people in 2017 than Barack Obama did during 2016.

Brown continued, “This is basically going to war against the state of California, the engine of the American economy. It’s not wise, it’s not right and it will not stand.” California AG Xavier Becerra joined brown in a press conference at the Capitol after Session’s speech at The Kimpton Sawyer Hotel next to the Sacramento Kings’ Golden 1 Center.

Sessions called out Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, a liberal politician in the mold of Brown but even more ideologically-driven, who warned communities in the East Bay about the coming federal immigration raids in advance. Pretty boy Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, likely California’s next governor, praised Schaaf’s irresponsible and surely illegal actions.

State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon from Los Angeles and author of one of the sanctuary state laws targeted by the Trump administration, accused Sessions of racism, of course, calling his ideology based on “white supremacy and white nationalism.” Kevin will probably be the next U.S. Senator from California, replacing the 84-year old Dianne Feinstein who has been in the Senate since 1992.

Tensions between the Trump administration in Washington and Brown’s regime in Sacramento have reached a boiling point after a year of escalating events. Fox News pundits are calling the sanctuary state laws a first step toward secession by the country’s most populous state. Rachel Maddow and MSNBC talking heads are declaring Sessions’ pointed attacks on California’s reckless behavior racist and anti-immigrant. It will be interesting to see whether this issue on state rights versus federal authority on immigration makes it to the Supreme Court anytime soon.

California has been in a world of its own and has felt or will feel some of the brunt of the new administration in our nation’s capital. Trump’s new tax plan passed at the end of last year hits California taxpayers the most, reducing significant deductions used in the state. GOP threats to curb Medicaid spending could potentially risk billions of dollars for the state’s residents and the government’s budget. Offshore drilling expansion, illegal immigration crackdowns, and punishing states that have legalized marijuana are all issues that the Trump administration will battle with California and other liberal havens throughout the nation during the Donald’s second year in office.

Hillary Clinton only won the popular vote in November 2016 because of the liberal landslide in California where many conservatives did not even bother to show up. California remains in a bubble, on the far left coast of the country as they are on the far left ideologically. A poll by the Public Policy Institute of California in February found that only 28 percent of Californians approved of Trump as president. Even in the Central Valley, usually much more conservative by nature, revealed just over 1 in 3 voters backed Donald Trump.

During a Fox News interview last year, President Trump declared that California was “out of control.” His Twitter feed over the last year has been quite negative toward The Golden State, taking aim at the state’s enormous taxes, exorbitant gas prices, ridiculous construction costs and onerous environmental reviews, and reckless judiciary system (as revealed by the Kate Steinle murder case verdict).

Trump finished 2017 without visiting the state once. However, Trump is set to visit California for the first time as president next week to check out prototypes of the border wall in San Diego, to attend a public fundraiser in Beverly Hills, and to possibly make an appearance in Fresno.
