13 soccer players from Portugal have caught the Omicron variant

The National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) confirmed this Monday that the first 13 cases of Covid-19 were detected in Portugal in the new Ómicron variant and that all are related to Belenenses SAD, as one of the players he has recently traveled to South Africa. “The preliminary tests carried out at INSA strongly suggest that all 13 cases associated with Belenenses SAD players are related to the Omicron variant of concern”, the statement reads. In the same sense, it is also clarified that, as a precaution, all contacts associated with these cases of infection were in prophylactic isolation, in order to break the transmission chains. Remember that, last Saturday, Belenenses SAD appeared on the field, against Benfica, with only nine players in the game sheet, since, by order of the health authorities, several players were in prophylactic isolation.

Apparently, one of the players from Belenenses went to South Africa couple of weeks ago and infected the entire team thereafter.
