US economy loses 23,000 jobs in July, prior gains get revised away

Payrolls dropped 23,000 in July against expectations of an 80,000 gain.

June revised down to 20,000 and May cut by 66,000.

Unemployment rate fell to 4.1 percent.

Labor force participation sank to 61.4 percent, lowest in over five years.

Average hourly earnings rose just 2 cents.

Local government education lost 50,000 jobs and retail lost 19,000.
