First, it was cyclospora, the parasite linked to contaminated lettuce. Now health officials are keeping a close eye on a drug-resistant fungus.

While the two are very different, both have raised concerns about public health. The latest threat is Candida auris (C. auris), a type of yeast that can cause serious infections and is difficult to treat because many strains are resistant to multiple antifungal medications.

Unlike foodborne illnesses, Candida auris is not spread through food and is not a virus. Instead, it primarily spreads in hospitals, nursing homes and other health care settings through contact with infected people, contaminated surfaces or shared medical equipment. Cases have been reported in 23 states this year, with Texas, Michigan and Illinois among the hardest hit.
