Trump draws papers to let ranchers process their own meat

Today Trump posted he wants to break a nasty monopoly of four big processors. Tyson. Cargill. JBS. National Beef. Those four handle about 85 percent of U.S. beef packing.
Exact line. Authorizing legal documents to be drawn. This should move quickly. That is a promise to start paperwork. Not a signed order on a plant floor.
Brooke Rollins said big announcements start Monday. Waive red tape. Help small plants. Let more meat sell across state lines. Rescind old guidance. No text of the order is out yet.
The idea came off Glenn Beck’s show on Aug. 26th. Beck owns a ranch. He told Trump to break the back of the processing cartel. Trump said wow. I am going to look at that today.
This sits on top of last week’s fight. Trump paused tariffs on up to 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef for 90 days. Said it would sell 25 percent below market. Ranchers called it a slap.
Thomas Massie said Friday the post is a nothing burger if it stays an executive order. Farmers already can process their own meat. The problem is selling it by the cut. He wants the PRIME Act passed as law.
Meat Institute said same day. Do not sell uninspected meat to people who do not know. Food safety first.
Custom slaughter for home use is already legal. Interstate sale of state inspected meat is the wall. Wyoming ranchers can sell in Wyoming. Not over the state line.
USDA already spent about $1 billion since 2021 on small plants. Rollins also announced a $500 million SPUR program on June 30th for small and mid size beef processors.
Reuters said the four companies did not comment right away. Justice Department has been looking at whether packers helped push beef prices up.
