
The interesting part isn’t that Americans like hobbies. It’s that small things are still affordable while the big things keep getting further away.
The latest BEA data makes that clearer. July consumer spending rose only 0.2%, while real spending was basically flat. Spending on goods actually fell by $49.9 billion, while services increased by $86.2 billion. Meanwhile, discount stores are seeing stronger traffic while major discretionary retailers are getting hit.

Dollar General’s same-store sales increased 3.5%, while Dollar Tree reported its first increase in store traffic in a year. Both companies said shoppers are looking for cheaper necessities while food and fuel costs remain elevated.
