Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands – a British territory in the South Atlantic – 43 years ago today.
UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher responded by dispatching a naval taskforce to retake the territory, pinning her political career on military success some 8,000 miles from London.
The conflict lasted for 74 days and cost the lives of over 900 people, with Thatcher scoring her highest ever public approval rating shortly after the Argentine surrender in June 1982.

The U.S. State Department’s declassified records are particularly useful: a June 11, 1982 White House/Special Situation Group transcript records an intelligence report that 22–26 A-4 Skyhawks had been delivered from Israel to Argentina.

The British Parliament was also investigating alleged Israeli supplies during the war. Its June 22, 1982 record lists allegations involving Bell helicopters, military equipment shipped from Tel Aviv, Mirage fuel tanks routed through Luxembourg/Bahamas/Peru, laser-guided bombs, Gabriel missiles and a $50 million financing arrangement. Israel denied some of those allegations while saying existing contracts would continue.
And contemporary Washington Post reporting from June 1982 said Western diplomatic sources believed Argentina had received 24 U.S.-made A-4 Skyhawks from Israel after the invasion. Israel denied supplying warplanes after the invasion.
On September 4, 2026, Argentine President Javier Milei reignited the Falklands/Malvinas dispute and announced measures targeting companies involved in offshore oil development around the islands. Two of the companies involved have strong Israeli ties.
