Same Friday, two very different labor-market prints.
The U.S. added 162,000 jobs and held unemployment at 4.1%. Canada lost 42,000 jobs while unemployment stayed at 6.4%.
But the Canadian weakness gets more interesting underneath the headline. Canada lost 20,000 public-sector jobs, youth employment fell by 19,000, and wage growth slowed to just 2% year over year. The U.S., meanwhile, got large gains from restaurants, local government education, construction and manufacturing.

Canada had added 181,000 jobs from April through July before giving back 42,000 in August. Wage growth slowed to 2%, its weakest reading since November 2017.
U.S. adds 162,000 jobs with unemployment at 4.1%
U.S. hiring came in almost three times above the 56,000 economist forecast, with restaurants and local government education providing much of the surge.
