Senate BLOCKS AI ‘kill switch’ bill

The US Senate blocked an attempt by Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana to expedite consideration of a bill that would require developers of advanced artificial intelligence systems to install an emergency shutdown mechanism. Kennedy sought the Senate’s unanimous consent to advance his AI Emergency Button Act.

As Anadolu Agency reports, Kennedy said that people must retain the ability to stop an AI system if it becomes uncontrollable. According to him, the bill would require such a mechanism in advanced AI models sold in the United States.

The senator clarified that the decision to activate the emergency switch would be made by the companies developing these systems, rather than the federal government. Kennedy also warned that, in a worst-case scenario, recursive AI self-improvement could allow a model to act beyond effective human control. He stressed the need to find a balance between innovation and public safety.
