Recent college graduates are hitting the worst September in more than a decade

The number of unemployed 20-to-24-year-olds with no previous work experience reached 249,000 in September.

That was the highest September reading since 2014.

More importantly, the number has risen for six consecutive months.

That’s the demographic you would watch if you’re looking for stress at the entry point into white-collar careers.

This is the counterweight.

September payrolls increased only 29,000, but the unemployment rate was 4.2%. Financial-activities employment was down 129,000 from its May 2025 peak.

So this is not evidence that AI has already destroyed half of America’s white-collar jobs.

The deterioration is showing up much more clearly among people trying to get their first foothold.
