  • The first bulletin was 8.0. USGS reviewed it to 7.7. One wire briefly had 7.6.
  • Hit at 12:56 p.m. Panama time. 1:56 p.m. Eastern.
  • Center is about 7 miles southwest of Pitaloza Arriba, on the Azuero Peninsula. Depth about 8 miles.
  • More than 120 miles southwest of the Panama Canal.
  • About 4.6 million people felt moderate to severe shaking. ShakeMap hit VIII.
  • PAGER is red. USGS says the hit is likely widespread. No body count yet.
  • Aftershocks at 2:22 p.m. and 2:37 p.m. Eastern. More can follow.
  • Panama City ran into the street. Felt in San José, Costa Rica.
  • Canal Authority says the waterway is open and normal.
  • Tsunami sheet, written on the 8.0, warned of hazardous waves within three hours for Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, and up the Central American coast. Hawaii was on the list.
  • First wave times: Punta Mala about 2:20 p.m. Eastern. Puerto Piña 2:31. Bahía Solano 2:34.
  • A tsunami is a set of waves. The first is not always the biggest.
