Ilhan Omar phone seized, 12 subpoenas issued. USCIS and DHS searches found no record of her father’s naturalization.

Agents took her phone Monday when they searched her Washington, D.C. home. Roughly a dozen grand jury subpoenas went out starting Friday, mostly to relatives, including sister Sahra Noor. Omar herself was not subpoenaed. Minnesota grand jury. Possible focus on conspiracy and false statements in immigration paperwork tied to family history. A magistrate judge limited how the Justice Department could access her congressional records before approving the warrant. Omar called the search an effort to target political enemies and has denied wrongdoing. Three weeks before midterms.

A.J. Kern, who challenged Omar in a 2022 Democratic primary, requested records on Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed. USCIS responded in a June 20, 2023 letter that a search of its database using name variations found no record of his naturalization. DHS later issued a Certificate of Non-Existence of Record dated September 6, 2023, after its own search also found nothing. Omar has said she derived citizenship as a minor through her father’s naturalization in 2000. The investigation is looking at whether her birth date was misstated so she would qualify as a minor at the time, and whether her father omitted or misstated military service on his forms. A missing record does not by itself prove he never naturalized or that her citizenship is invalid. Government records and archives in Somalia are incomplete after years of conflict.
