Alberta votes today on starting process for possible separation referendum

Albertans are voting Monday on 10 referendum questions, including one that asks whether the province should remain in Canada or start the legal steps toward a binding referendum on separating. The separation question is nonbinding. Premier Danielle Smith has said she will respect the result. Polls put support for remaining in Canada around 70 to 74 percent, with roughly 22 percent backing the option to begin a separation process. Polls close at 8 p.m. local time. Results on the separation question are expected to be counted first. This is the first time Alberta has put a separation-related question to a public vote.
