Erik Brynjolfsson, director of Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab and co-author of The Second Machine Age, warns that AI is accelerating toward a massive economic disruption that society is nowhere near prepared for. New research using payroll records through June 2026 found that employment among workers aged 22 to 25 in highly AI-exposed occupations was 19% below where it would have been if it had kept pace with peers in less-exposed jobs. Entry-level positions are disappearing from job postings as companies increasingly favor experienced workers, while AI agents are beginning to handle customer service tasks that once required human employees. Brynjolfsson warns that AI could concentrate economic and political power among a smaller group of people as workers receive a shrinking share of economic output. With AI capabilities advancing faster than institutions can adapt, the question is whether society can prepare before the disruption accelerates further.
