Supreme Court blocks New Hampshire student IDs for midterm voting after state law removed them from accepted forms.

The Supreme Court issued an unsigned order today restoring New Hampshire’s 2026 law that bars high school and college student IDs as valid identification at the polls for the November 3 midterms. The order lifts a preliminary injunction issued October 2 by U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante that had allowed the cards as a secondary form of ID under a safety-valve provision. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented. The state enacted the restriction in April after Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed the measure. All New Hampshire voters must now present government-issued photo ID. The ruling applies the Purcell principle against last-minute changes to election rules.
