Student-led “sea of lights” rallies in Serbia challenge state power today through nonviolent discipline

Thousands of Serbian university students and citizens filled central Belgrade today, holding phone lights aloft and observing extended periods of complete silence to protest institutional corruption and election manipulation. The visual discipline and absence of property destruction across the capital’s streets contrast sharply with violent demonstrations elsewhere, establishing the student-led movement as a potent political force ahead of national elections.

The peaceful mobilization builds on nearly two years of widespread anti-government protests that began following the deadly November 2024 train station roof collapse in Novi Sad. The disaster which killed 16 people ignited public fury over infrastructure negligence, prompting university students to organize university strikes and lead massive civic marches that transformed public anger into a formal electoral challenge against the ruling party.
