Netanyahu orders full West Bank lockdown after Hebron checkpoint shooting kills two soldiers today, days before Israeli elections

Israeli forces killed two Palestinian gunmen after a 20-minute firefight at a military checkpoint near Hebron this morning that left two soldiers dead—Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem, 20 and three others wounded. The IDF said the attackers, both 27-year-olds from Hebron, carried an M16, a handgun and a large quantity of ammunition intended for a larger attack on Route 35. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered an immediate cordon of Hebron and preparations for a full lockdown of the West Bank starting today, with plans to evacuate residents from the gunmen’s neighborhood and demolish the site. The West Bank was already slated for election-related restrictions ahead of Tuesday’s vote. At least 96 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the territory this year, according to the UN. This marks the fourth such broad closure in the past month.
