Sharp drops for AI stocks overwhelm markets worldwide

AI-related stocks have been swinging on worries that their boom may be under threat because of how expensive it’s become to borrow money to build datacenters and buy more AI chips.

Meta Platforms, which is pushing its Muse AI agent, lost 7% after reporting stronger revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected, shedding tens of billions in market value.

Tesla fell 3.1% after reporting a stronger profit for the summer than analysts expected.

CoreWeave, which has borrowed money to buy Nvidia’s AI chips that it rents out to customers over the cloud, has been particularly shaky in recent weeks because of worries about its debt. It dropped 10.1%.

Meta’s AI spending bill spooks investors as cash flow turns negative

Meta lost roughly 7% in Thursday’s session, wiping out billions in market value after raising its 2026 spending outlook to $135 billion–$145 billion. Its free cash flow turned negative at $2.12 billion in the third quarter, compared with positive cash flow of $10.63 billion a year earlier. Investors are questioning whether the returns from AI will justify the mounting expense.

Wall Street braces for a make-or-break week for AI spending

Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon are due to report earnings next week, with investors focused on their AI spending plans and evidence of returns. Hyperscaler capital spending is expected to approach $800 billion this year. If the companies signal that spending will slow or profits are not keeping pace, the market could face another round of selling.

AI-linked bonds and stocks expose a financing problem

CoreWeave shares fell about 10% on Thursday, while the cost of insuring its debt rose sharply. Its borrowing costs show how vulnerable AI infrastructure companies can become when investors demand more compensation for financing expensive projects. A sustained credit squeeze could hit the companies building data centers even if demand for AI computing continues to grow.

Semiconductor equipment warning triggers another AI selloff

Lam Research fell nearly 12% after its results and outlook disappointed investors, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 6.7%. Nvidia fell 4%, Meta lost 7%, and CoreWeave dropped about 10%. The selling spread across companies tied to AI infrastructure, suggesting investors are questioning not just individual valuations but the cost and profitability of the entire buildout.
