The California Public Utilities Commission voted today to approve a 4.2 billion dollar transmission infrastructure plan designed to expand high-voltage electrical grid capacity across rural power corridors. Regulators confirmed the grid upgrades are necessary to accommodate surging power demands from hyperscale data center facilities and regional artificial intelligence server farms.
The multi-billion dollar utility approval coincides with widespread regional energy bottlenecks slowing technology investments. On October 22, industrial supply chain disclosures revealed that newly delivered server racks sat idling inside holding facilities across North America due to multi-year utility queue delays for power interconnections.
