At least 60 people killed in Ethiopia, with both sides blaming each other

At least 60 people were killed in two attacks in Ethiopia’s Oromiya region last week, according to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. More than 20 homes were burned and more than 20 people were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The government blamed a rebel alliance. A source connected to the alliance blamed the regional government. Neither side’s account has been independently confirmed.

This is happening while Ethiopia is already facing fighting in the north, including tensions involving Tigray and neighboring Eritrea. The country has several conflicts running at once, and another round of violence makes it harder to see how things settle down.

Reuters reports the deaths in Oromiya and the competing accusations over responsibility.

Eritrea asked the UN Security Council to intervene in its dispute with Ethiopia, after both countries traded accusations over military movements near their border.
