Masked anti fascists burn cars and containers in Bilbao Spain after Vito Quiles cancels campus talk.

Vito Quiles, the right wing Spanish activist on his Tour Combativos II, had planned to speak near the University of Deusto in Bilbao on Monday evening. The university shut the campus from 2 pm and closed it at 3 pm after Ertzaintza warned of high risk of trouble. Quiles said police told him the risk was “very high,” with former ETA members and street terrorists among the protesters, so he canceled about half an hour before the 7 pm start. Morning student march drew around 2,000. Afternoon anti fascist groups brought several thousand more, chanting against fascism and for class unity. The talk never went ahead.

After the protest broke up, masked groups moved into the Deusto neighborhood. They burned rubbish containers, at least half a dozen cars (some reports say up to a dozen), and a municipal police motorcycle. Stones and fireworks were thrown at officers. Barricades went up. Some shops were hit. Ertzaintza charged and made arrests. Final count is 19 detained plus three under investigation, including several minors (around seven to eleven of them under 18). Basque lehendakari Imanol Pradales called the scenes intolerable. Security officials pointed to organized Basque radical groups. Quiles blamed ETA types and said free speech is sacred but not worth putting people in danger. University stressed the talk was external and not authorized on campus. Damage estimates already put public costs at tens of thousands of euros from burned containers alone.
