At least 30 dead after two high-speed trains collide in Spain.

A Renfe AVE and a private Iryo train crashed Wednesday morning near Urda in Toledo province, south of Madrid. One train rear-ended the other while both were heading toward Seville. Two carriages left the tracks and went down an embankment. Officials put the death toll at a minimum of 30, with warnings it will rise. About 397 people were on the Renfe train and 147 on the Iryo. Rescue crews are still working the scene. High-speed service between Madrid and Andalusia is suspended. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was shocked and is in contact with the transport minister. This is the second major high-speed crash in Spain this year.

Preliminary reports indicate an LZB signalling system failure forced a switch to manual control. Several trains stopped. The Iryo remained stationary. An Adif operator at the Atocha control centre then authorised the Renfe train to proceed past a red signal into the occupied section. Still under official investigation.
