15-year-old kills grandmother with an axe. Judge says it’s important to “cultivate hope.”

A Quebec teenager who hacked his grandmother to death with an axe has been sentenced to five years in custody. Judge Sophie Gravel told him it was important to “cultivate hope.”

The boy was just two when his mother was shot dead. His grandmother raised him from then on. On November 11, 2025, he killed the 73-year-old woman who had brought him up, inflicting nine wounds before fleeing in her minivan. He crashed the vehicle and was arrested.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in August. The court heard about his psychological problems, but experts found him criminally responsible. Prosecutors told the court he has since returned to school, started writing music and stopped using drugs. The judge believes he still has a future.

Five years for killing the woman who raised him. The judge wants him to hold on to hope. The grandmother is dead, and her family did not attend the sentencing.
