In next 10 years U.S. Treasury will spend $20 trillion in interest. National debt hits 100% of GDP.

CBO released projections this week showing the Treasury will spend $20.1 trillion on interest payments from 2026 to 2036. That covers the current roughly $40 trillion debt load plus new deficits. Interest ran $1.2 trillion in 2026 and is projected to reach nearly $2.5 trillion a year by 2036, or about $200 billion a month. Defense is projected at $1.1 trillion by then. Fiscal 2026 deficit was about $2 trillion. Debt held by the public reached $32.2 trillion at the end of fiscal 2026 on September 30, equaling 100.03% of GDP once third-quarter GDP numbers came out. First fiscal-year-end triple-digit reading since 1946. Up from 99.4% the year before. Gross debt is higher, over $40 trillion.
