A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck 115 kilometers southeast of Bushehr in southern Iran late Saturday at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter lies in Bushehr province home to Iran’s only operating nuclear power plant. No immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged. The plant was built to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8 or 9 and has continued normal operations after stronger tremors nearby in past years including a magnitude 6.1 event in 2013 that killed dozens farther from the facility.

At just 10 km deep, this shallow event was likely felt across a wide area of Bushehr Province. Shallow earthquakes can produce stronger local shaking than deeper events of the same magnitude.
