Surging factory floor orders raise diesel demand and drive national freight rate spikes

US manufacturing activity accelerated today to its strongest production pace in nearly five years, with the ISM production index surging on massive factory floor output. The manufacturing boom triggered an immediate surge in industrial diesel demand, which compounded an existing fuel squeeze that pushed national freight linehaul spot rates up 28 percent year-over-year. Rising fuel expenses initially began eating into regional carrier margins following an October 21 Department of Energy decision to release 315,000 barrels of heating reserves from federal stocks to stabilize diesel supply.
