Iran says deal with Trump is still far away, hours after US strikes Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz

An Iranian official told Reuters today that Tehran and Washington remain far from an agreement to end the war, rejecting what Iran calls excessive US demands. The statement came hours after American forces struck Iran’s Qeshm Island, a strategic position overlooking the Strait of Hormuz. US officials described the attacks as limited defensive strikes against missile systems threatening American forces, not a return to full-scale bombing. Vice President JD Vance had just said negotiations were making progress, while Trump claimed Iran wanted a deal. Qatar is still carrying messages between the two sides, but Tehran insists the US must lift its naval blockade and meet Iran’s conditions before Hormuz can reopen. Iran also says nuclear negotiations can only begin afterward. This follows the September seven-step proposal rejected by Trump, which called for lifting the blockade, reopening Hormuz and easing oil sanctions. The war began February 28, and the strait has remained a central pressure point. Oil fell more than 7% Monday on hopes of a settlement, then rebounded Tuesday after the Qeshm strikes and Iran’s rejection of Washington’s terms. Brent climbed back above $106 a barrel. The two sides are negotiating while exchanging military threats, and the latest American strike has made the gap between diplomatic progress and an actual ceasefire harder to ignore.
