33,100 electric heavy trucks were sold in China in September, accounting for 50.3% of all sales. That’s up 37% from a year ago, even while total heavy truck sales dropped 21%. Just 2 years ago, electric trucks had only 13.6% of the market. Now diesel is losing ground fast. Kpler estimates electric and natural gas trucks will replace 680,000 barrels per day of diesel consumption this year, while China’s total diesel demand is expected to fall by 230,000 barrels per day. The Iran war and soaring fuel costs are giving trucking companies another reason to switch, and CATL is building out battery-swapping stations for heavy trucks, targeting 900 by the end of this year and 2,000 in 2027. The world’s largest oil importer is rapidly replacing diesel trucks with electric ones.
