Election night produces historic firsts across America, from the first openly gay senator to the first Black woman governor

November 3 delivered a series of firsts in American politics. New Hampshire elected Chris Pappas as the first openly gay man to serve in the U.S. Senate. Georgia elected Keisha Lance Bottoms as the first Black woman governor in U.S. history. Florida elected Byron Donalds as its first Black governor. Texas elected Gina Hinojosa as its first Latina governor, while Michigan sent Abdul El-Sayed to the Senate as the first Muslim elected to that chamber. In Washington, D.C., voters elected democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George as mayor.
