Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong gets another 10 years in prison, and may not walk free until 2036

Joshua Wong, the face of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement during the 2014 Umbrella protests, was sentenced to another 10 years in prison today. He pleaded guilty to conspiring with overseas activists to seek foreign sanctions against China and Hong Kong under Beijing’s national security law. Wong has already spent nearly six years behind bars and was previously serving a four-year-and-eight-month sentence. The new sentence means he could remain imprisoned until late 2036. Beijing imposed the national security law in June 2020 after the massive 2019 protests. Wong was among the most recognizable young activists demanding democratic reforms, and now he faces another decade in prison for the foreign-collusion case.
