Editor’s note: A spokeswoman for the CDC confirmed for Food Safety News on Jan. 3 that one person has died in the U.S., five have been admitted to hospitals and two have developed kidney failure because of HUS as a result of their E. coli infections.

      • I know that happens, but IMO that isn’t the source of this. If you followed the story all the way through the presentation, you’d hear that this strain is the same as one that struck 25 years ago in burgers. Hamburger is notoriously susceptible to ecoli contamination because of the processing…and it is BOVINE in origin. I think it is far more likely this is the result of improper use of a manure fertilization process many farmers use.
