Donald Trump has threatened to “cut off the whole relationship” with China, as tensions between the US and China continue to rise over the origins of Covid-19.
“I’m very disappointed in China. I will tell you that right now,” the US President said in an interview with Fox Business. “There are many things we could do. We could cut off the whole relationship. Now if you did, what would happen? You’d save $500 billion.”
It came in response to a question about whether the US should refuse Chinese nationals student visas for sensitive science areas.
The Chinese government has hit back at the President through its state-controlled Global Times newspaper, which said cutting off China “may put world peace in a dangerous position”.
The report accused the President of “talking nonsense”, claimed he was “bluffing and acting tough towards China to win more support”, and called him a “giant baby on the brink of a meltdown”.

China is firmly opposed to any country’s arms sales to Taiwan region or military ties in any form between each other, Ren Guoqiang, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense said Friday in response to France’s plan to sell arms to Taiwan.
China demands the French to immediately withdraw the planned arms sales to Taiwan region so as not to cause further damage to the relations between the two countries as well as the two militaries, the spokesperson said.
“There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China,” he noted.

China should prepare for more inflammatory comments from US President Donald Trump and his team as relations between the two countries come under increasing pressure due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic recession it created, according to observers.
The assessment came after Trump expressed doubts over the phase one trade agreement signed between Washington and Beijing in January, saying the US would save US$500 billion if it “cut off the whole relationship” with China.
In an interview with Fox Business News on Thursday, Trump even poured cold water on his personal ties to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“I have a very good relationship [with Xi], but I just, right now I don’t want to speak to him.”
The two leaders last spoke on February 7.
