Amazon Will Start Charging Sales Tax in Missouri, Starting February 2017

by Amna El Tawil

If you live in Missouri and shop on Amazon, get ready to start paying more for your purchases. According to numerous reports, the retail giant is set to start charging a sales tax for all purchases coming from this state. This new decision is set to start on February 1, 2017, and the sales tax rate is 4.225%.

Items sold by Seattle-based Amazon.com and its subsidiaries already are subject to sales tax for merchandise shipped to more than 30 states. The retail giant will also begin collecting sales tax on February 1 in Mississippi, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Vermont, and in Wyoming in March.

Online retailers are not required to charge a sales tax if they do not have a physical office in that state. At present, Amazon does not have an office or warehouse in Missouri, but that could change.

Last week, Amazon announced that it plans to create more than 100,000 new full-time jobs in the U.S. in the next 18 months, bringing its total workforce in the country to 280,000.

Don’t expect Amazon to hire 100,000 coders, however. Much of its current and future workforce is made up of employees working warehouse jobs and answering phones.

“These jobs are not just in our Seattle headquarters or in Silicon Valley — they’re in our customer service network, fulfillment centers, and other facilities in local communities throughout the country,” Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder, and CEO said in a statement.

Trump’s transition team was quick to take some credit for the announcement.

“The announcement was made after the president-elect met with heads of several other tech companies and urge them to keep their jobs and production inside the United States,” Sean Spicer, the incoming press secretary, said on a call with media outlets Thursday. “The president-elect was pleased to have played a role in that decision by Amazon.”

  1. Amazon is flying “on a hope and a prayer” right now… and making the choice to begin charging a state tax… IE: becoming a “tax collector for the vampire bureaucrats will NOT enhance their stature.
I shall enjoy watching them roll slowly from side to side in the shallow waters, like a beached whale.
