2021. Is China gliding toward a FOBS capability?
Media reports indicate that China has tested a system that appears to incorporate a glide body into a Fractional Orbital Bombardment System (FOBS), a nuclear-weapons delivery system that places warheads into low-earth orbit prior to de-orbiting them on to their targets. Some details of the test are unclear, and China has denied that it took place. FOBS are a Cold War technology, but if reports of the test are accurate, China would be the first state to develop this supplemented capability. Whether developing a glider-FOBS would actually provide China with a strategic advantage is debatable. What is more certain is that the test demonstrates the continuing strategic competition and counteractions between China and the United States in the missile-technology realm.
