Elon Musk has revealed plans to create a city on Mars that is entirely self-sufficient and not dependent on links to Earth for its survival.
He said projects to develop a Martian settlement were already underway but need to be complete before a cataclysmic event takes place on Earth.
He said such an eventuality could occur from a number of potential scenarios, giving examples of a comet hitting the Earth, a supervolcano erupting or even “nuclear Armageddon” on Earth.

Alternative 3 was the space program; it included ‘Star Wars’, where they considered nuking the passing planet to destroy it or to change its orbit and/or setting colonies on other planets for the elite to escape the cataclysm there, leaving most of humanity behind
