He demanded his fellow leaders use the “full firepower” of Brussels to overcome the economic turmoil brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. In the first sign of an imminent high-level row, the Italian leader refused to give up on the creation of “corona bonds” to share the borrowing costs of the economic rebuilds. Mr Conte insisted he wouldn’t allow his citizens to make “unacceptable sacrifices” in order to allow Rome to borrow funds from the bloc’s bailout mechanisms.
