The delayed Summer Olympics in Japan are no lock to go on as planned.
Two members of the country’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party said on Thursday the event could be canceled or held without fans due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Secretary general Toshihiro Nikai mentioned the cancellation possibility less than 100 days before the scheduled start of the games.
“If it seems impossible to go on with the games, they must be definitely canceled,” Nikai said on Japanese television. “If there is a surge in infections because of the Olympics, there will be no meaning to having the Olympics.”
