Black Lives Matter will have armed officers; wants police defunded nationwide

 

On ABC’s Nightline on June 1, 2020, Black Lives Matter (BLM) cofounder Patrisse Cullors, who is also a TV writer, claims that “police terror” against “black communities” had gotten worse after Trump became President, and that Trump told police to hurt people. She said:

“We’ve seen a ratcheting up of pushing law enforcement to be more brutal, use excessive force. He has told law enforcement, in his own words to hurt people… And what we know are those people are mostly black people.”

Cullors says BLM is calling for the defunding of police nationwide:

“Many people don’t understand that the foundation of policing is actually in slave patrolling. The first law enforcement agencies were out to catch black people who were leaving — fleeing from slavery. We want to reduce law enforcement in our communities. The more contact we have with law enforcement, the more death is going to happen with black people.”

Enough is enough.

Our pain, our cries, and our need to be seen and heard resonate throughout this entire country.

We demand acknowledgment and accountability for the devaluation and dehumanization of Black life at the hands of the police.

We call for radical, sustainable solutions that affirm the prosperity of Black lives.

George Floyd’s violent death was a breaking point — an all too familiar reminder that, for Black people, law enforcement doesn’t protect or save our lives. They often threaten and take them.

Right now, Minneapolis and cities across our country are on fire, and our people are hurting — the violence against Black bodies felt in the ongoing mass disobedience, all while we grapple with a pandemic that is disproportionately affecting, infecting, and killing us.

We call for an end to the systemic racism that allows this culture of corruption to go unchecked and our lives to be taken.

Minneapolis City Council members pledge to ‘dismantle’ police department

Members of the Minneapolis City Council  pledged to “dismantle” the city’s police department in the wake of worldwide protests over the killing of George Floyd.

Council President Lisa Bender joined several other members in promises to drastically change how public safety is upheld in the city.

“We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a transformative new model of public safety,” Bender tweeted.

Bender joined colleagues like Jeremiah Ellison, who said reforms to the department are not enough.

“And when we’re done, we’re not simply gonna glue [the department] back together,” tweeted Ellison. “We are going to dramatically rethink how we approach public safety and emergency response.”

UPDATE: Protesters pull down Confederate statue in Richmond’s Monroe Park

Update 10:45 p.m.: Protesters toppled a Confederate statue from its pedestal in Monroe Park on Saturday night.

After a day and evening of peaceful protests and marches in Richmond and its suburbs, protesters using ropes pulled down a statue honoring Confederate Gen. Williams Carter Wickham, which has stood in the park since 1891.

Most of the protesters who had marched through the city Saturday night had already dispersed when the statue was taken down. After it fell, one person urinated on the statue and then ran away.

About an hour after the incident in Monroe Park, nearly 40 cars were seen surrounding the Lee statue, blocking traffic along Monument Avenue.

In 2017, two brothers descended from a Confederate general had called on Mayor Levar Stoney and City Council to remove the statue depicting their great-great-great-grandfather.
