Interest rates have been negative in Europe for years. The global lockdown from 2020 has forced banks now to charge all depositors in Germany to keep cash in their banks. Negative nominal interest rates are real in Europe but here in the United States we also have a REAL negative savings rate on our deposits. The biggest lesson we can all learn is that it no longer pays to save in commercial banks’.
