Tyson Foods just shut down its Joslin, Illinois beef plant with almost no warning — wiping out roughly 3,000 head of daily processing capacity overnight.
A buyer was looking at cattle on Tuesday. By Thursday the plant was done.
This follows the earlier closure of Tyson’s Lexington, Nebraska plant and comes as the company also closes a case-ready facility in Utah and puts its Pasco, Washington plant up for sale. Tyson says it will now focus on just three remaining plants in Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas.
For cattle feeders in Illinois and Iowa, the impact is immediate: hauls of 160 to 400 miles, extra freight and shrink, and fewer bidders at the sale barn. Market observers are already talking about potential pressure of $50 to $200 per head in the near term.
This is happening while the U.S. cattle herd sits at its lowest level in 75 years, according to USDA data.
In this report we break down the numbers, the producer impact, and what it means when processing capacity disappears in the middle of a historic cattle shortage.
