On the Dash:
- 3-year-old used vehicle prices hit a record $32,461 in Q2 2026, up 4% year over year
- Sub-$20,000 used vehicles fell from 55.2% of sales in 2019 to 31.8% in Q2 2026
- A $10K-$15K budget now buys a vehicle four years older with 40,000 more miles than in 2019
The used car market that dealers relied on to serve first-time buyers and budget-conscious shoppers has fundamentally repriced itself. Edmunds‘ Q2 2026 Used Vehicle Market Report found that the average transaction price for a 3-year-old used vehicle reached $32,461 in the second quarter, a new second-quarter record and a 4% jump from a year earlier.
The pressure is concentrated at the entry level, where dealers have historically drawn in first-time buyers and shoppers priced out of new.
