Anak Krakatau enters a continuous eruption
Indonesia’s Geological Agency says the eruption began at 23:07 local time and was still continuing at 04:40, with persistent glowing lava fountains and lava flows. The volcano has remained at Level III Siaga since July 2.
Ash reaches about 15 km and aviation warnings are issued
Darwin VAAC tracked ash to approximately 15 km / 50,000 feet, moving west at around 74 km/h. SIGMET aviation warnings were issued for the Jakarta and Melbourne flight information regions.
Authorities warn coastal residents but say there is no reason to panic
Indonesia’s disaster agency urged people in coastal Banten and Lampung to remain calm while monitoring the eruption. The existing exclusion zone remains 3 km from the crater.
